The Facebook
Support Group
The Gout Support Group of America utilizes the private group Facebook platform. With more than 13,000 members, those suffering with gout have an open platform to connect with others experiencing similar symptoms, stigma, and worries.
As the Facebook group is private, potential members must complete a questionnaire before being approved to join the group by an administrator. Group rules include:
No Self-Promotion or Spam
Give more than you take to this group. Self-promotion, spam, and irrelevant links (pictures or websites) to promote a product or service are prohibited without permission.
Respect Everyone’s Privacy
Being part of this group requires mutual trust. Authentic, expressive discussions make groups great, but may also be sensitive and private. What is shared in the group should stay in the group.
No Hate Speech or Bullying
Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind is not allowed, and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender, or identity will not be tolerated.
With these rules in place, and actively enforced, the GSGA hopes to provide a safe space to discuss gout. Along with posts and discussions, Gary and Dr. Parker regularly host “Facebook Live” sessions to further help educate and support the community.
