Busting gout myths. Gout has been misunderstood for centuries, and even today, patients still hear outdated advice, miracle cure claims, and straight-up misinformation.
That’s why we sat down with Chris, a rheumatology expert and longtime GSGA supporter, to bust some of the most common myths we see in our community. Here’s what he had to say, plus what patients really need to know.
Myth #1: “Apple cider vinegar can cure gout.”
Busted: Sorry, TikTok. Whether it’s apple cider vinegar, cherry juice, oranges, or yams, there’s no magical food that can cure gout.
Chris breaks it down: “Gout is an underlying medical condition. You can’t simply drink or avoid one thing and expect a cure. Managing gout means regular lab work, understanding your uric acid levels, and following a full treatment plan. Apple cider vinegar isn’t going to cut it.”

Myth #2: “Traditional treatments always work.”
Truth: Traditional treatments work for most people, but not all. And that’s okay.
“One size fits most, but not everyone,” Chris explains. “If your current meds aren’t helping or your flares keep coming back, it might be time to see a specialist, like a rheumatologist, who can tailor a plan that works for you.”
If Plan A didn’t work, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Find a Rheumatologist (a gout specialist!) who can help you navigate next steps.
Myth #3: “I feel better, so I don’t need to worry about gout anymore.”
Busted, big time: Gout is sneaky like that.
“The biggest myth I hear? People thinking once the pain stops, they’re in the clear,” Chris says. “But the truth is, gout is a chronic condition. Even when you’re not flaring, damage can still be happening under the surface.”
It’s a journey, from out-of-control flares to managing your uric acid and actually feeling well. Don’t stop just because the pain does.
Reminder: Stopping your meds because you feel better is one of the fastest ways back to square one.
