Gary’s gout success story is one of pain, persistence, and ultimately, empowerment.
His gout success story – after 16 years of living with untreated, worsening gout, often dismissed and disbelieved, he finally found answers and a doctor who listened. That turning point changed everything. Through treatment and support, Gary not only regained his health, but co-founded the Gout Support Group of America to help others find the hope he once needed.
If you’ve ever felt alone in your journey with gout, his story is proof that a better path is possible, and no one has to go it alone.
His gout success story his own words :
I was 24 when the first attack hit, a pain in my ankle so severe I thought I’d broken it. I knew it might be gout because my dad lived with the disease, but my doctor told me I was too young. No tests were done, and I left without answers.
What followed was 16 years of worsening pain and frustration. The occasional flares became constant and unbearable. I lost my mid-20s and all of my 30s to a disease that was never taken seriously, a struggle that eventually left me relying on crutches or a wheelchair just to get around. My joints deteriorated, my kidneys were damaged, and I lived in fear of the next flare.
The hardest part wasn’t only the pain. It was feeling invisible. I was given pain medication and steroids but no solutions. Friends, employers, even some doctors implied it was my fault. I internalized that stigma and carried the shame of believing I had caused my own disease.
Everything changed when I finally met a rheumatologist who listened. Tests confirmed what I had suspected all along. The damage was real, but for the first time, I had a path forward. Through treatment and a clinical trial, I regained mobility, restored my kidney function, and began to reclaim my life. Just as important, I began to understand that gout was not my fault. That shift in mindset became the blueprint for my recovery, and later, for the support system I wanted to build for others.
In 2015, I co-founded the Gout Support Group of America with that same rheumatologist, Dr. Chris Parker. What began in his office has grown into a national community where people with gout can find answers, encouragement, and hope.
“No one should face gout alone, and now they don’t have to.”
